Tae hurried into the room but stopped at the door to watch Rae for a moment. She was staring across the space at a vase sitting by itself, away from the others, with a large sunflower and some roses. He knew those were what Clark had carried in. “Annyeonghaseyo, Eomeoni,” he greeted her softly.

Rae shifted her head to look at him. “I remember the day you told me you were gay.”

“Eomeoni…”

“No. I have to say this. I remember the first thing I thought was how unhappy you would be. But you were always an unhappy child. Other boys were running around, playing sports, and you were busy plucking the wings off bees.”

Tae winced. “I’m not a serial killer, Eomeoni.”

“I never said you were.” Rae’s voice was flat, measured. “You grew out of that and your life now is great except that you are lonely.”

“Eomeoni, I’m not lonely.”

“I’m old, not stupid. Clark is a good sort. I feel it in my bones. If you mess around without trying to keep him…”

“And how am I supposed to do that?” Tae asked. He fell into the chair and covered his eyes with one hand. “I tried being tender with him in the waiting room and he ran so fast I still have whiplash.”

Rae chuckled. “Well, think about it. You have all these luxuries in your life and he serves people food for a living. I think he doesn’t feel as if he has anything to contribute. You have to show him that if he takes a chance on you, the most important thing he can contribute is the love you’ve been looking for.”

“Eomeoni, you sound like a greeting card.”

“Am I wrong?” she asked.

Tae rose, kissed her head and pulled the blankets up to her neck. “Get some sleep. I’ll come back and check in with you tomorrow after I leave the office. Saranghae.”

“You and your father were always good at changing the subject,” she said. “I love you too.”

Tae smiled and left the room then. He stood by the door, forehead pressed to the frame, watching her silently. As long as he knew his mother, she’d always told it like it was. The truth was, Rae had been right. He did feel a strong attraction to Clark, a kind of pull he’d never experienced with anyone else. When he was sure Rae was sleeping, he shoved his fingers into his pockets. He found his car in the garage, paid for parking and headed out.

He kept playing his mother’s words over and over in his head. Could he truly make things work with Clark? How was that even possible? Clark was nothing like him—probably didn’t know anything about the Korean culture. But here he was falling hard for this man who lit Tae’s body on fire and burned his very soul to the ground. What was more important?

When Tae looked up, he was parked outside Clark’s building. He knew he shouldn’t have asked Colin where Clark lived. This would never have happened if he’d just left that bit of knowledge alone.
